I'm a goth at heart and i love all things supernatural mainly vampires. There are so many different authors writing about them but in this post
I'm thinking about the very popular series that is now the hit TV series True Blood. This is also known as the Southern Vampire Mysteries with
Sookie Stackhouse as the main character.
Charlaine Harris who is the author has written such amazing books and the characters just jump of the page at you.
Now when i heard that these books were being/had been made into a TV series i was so excited and i couldn't wait to watch it and seen what had been done with it. I saw the trailers and it looked amazing and counted down the time until i could see it. So i already knew the story and knew this wouldn't spoil it for me and I'd heard that it was a really big hit and that made the waiting even worse.
That first episode came on and as i watched it i saw and thought that it had promise so i looked forward to the next episode. As the series went on i spent so much time screaming NO at the screen that i knew that i could not watch the next series. I did give it a chance and watched the whole series but i was so disappointed with it what else could i do but vow not to watch it any more.
I understand that turning a book into a script is not an easy thing and unlike in a book you can't transfer a characters thoughts as easily. These programmes say they are based on the book then shouldn't they have at least 80% in common?
Now the first series or season as it can be known was based on the book DEAD UNTIL DARK and this is where you get to meet alot of the characters for the first time. One of the biggest things that got to me was that they majorly changed the character Jason Stackhouse's personality, they turned him into a complete arse when in the book he was an ok guy who had taken a wrong turn or two but was soon back to being the nice guy you knew he was at heart. This is the one character that i can remember off the top of my head that was changed so much. There were other things that i felt was wrong like characters turning up in the wrong places like the fact that they shouldn't be in that series at all but in the next one and brand new characters that really have no place in it at all as they were never in the books.
Please don't get me wrong i love these books and when the last book came out i rushed out and brought it within the first few days of it being released and i read it within 24 hours and i recently started reading them all again. I just believe that it has to be one or the other. If i hadn't read the books i would love the series as the casting is brilliant and if you didn't know the story you would totally be drawn into this world.
So if you haven't seen it or read it and you think it maybe you sort of thing and you want to compare the two i would suggest that you watch the series first and then read the book.
So for now enjoy coz I'm going to read book two again
